THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS FOR YOU TO KEEP

As one of the largest manufacturers of Professional hair care products in the United States, we are in constant need of consumers for our testing facility. Testing requires us to evaluate products that are currently under development. Our procedures are different than what you experience in salons. WE EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF PRODUCTS ON THE HAIR AS IT PERTAINS TO THE PRODUCT PERFORMANCE. For haircare and styling, salon technicians, marketing personnel and chemists will be evaluating the performance of a product on wet and dry hair. For haircolor testing, salon technicians, chemists and marketing personnel will be evaluating new haircolor shades for depth and tone including performance. At the testing facility, it will take much longer to perform a service than a normal salon would. Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated. Please anticipate to remain at the facility for 3 hours for a haircolor service, 1 ½ hours for styling service and 4 hours for a chemical texture service (smoothing, relaxer, perm, bodywave etc.)

We do not perform haircutting services although certain tests will require adherence to specific lengths.

Today you will experience the initial consultation. It will provide us with your hair history, visual hair analysis (diameter of hair, condition, length, etc.) and determine if you’re suitable for the products currently in development. Please be honest about your hair history and provide as much information as possible. This information is crucial and will have a definite effect on the final condition/color of your hair. You will also be given an allergy/patch test.

If you qualify, we will book a future appointment today. You must be available for up to 3 hours for a haircolor test, 1 ½ hours for a styling test and 4 hours for a chemical texture service. Please be prepared to spend the time necessary for us to conduct the test. There may be occasions that this process may take longer than expected.

We cannot determine how long you will be able to participate in the program. It will be based on our testing priorities and your consistent adherence to our guidelines. You may not always meet the test criteria and therefore may not be a proper candidate. You may choose not to participate in certain tests, such as chemical straightening, relaxer, or perm.

We would like to thank you for taking the time to participate in our pre-screening and for your interest in the New York Technical Salon.

KEY POINTS FOR NEW PARTICIPANTS

This is a TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT FACILITY. OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO EVALUATE PRODUCTS.

All technicians are licensed cosmetologists. Specific technicians may not be requested.

All services are free of charge. Services are available throughout the year; contingent upon your participation and flexibility.

Haircuts are not a service at the technical development facility.

SKIN ALLERGY TESTS are required. Skin Allergy Tests are required in order to be eligible for color services. These tests are done to determine if you are allergic or sensitive to hair color and must be done even if you have had previous haircolor at another location. If you experience a reaction within 48 hours, it is your responsibility to communicate this to us. If you have not had color for six months, another allergy test will be performed before you may participate in color testing. If you have had any form of tattoo, regular or permanent make-up, since your last color appointment, you should have a new allergy test prior to your color service. Skin Allergy tests are a mandatory company policy and cannot be waived under any circumstance.

You must be 18 years or older to receive services. If you are a minor, a legal guardian who is responsible for signing the release form prior to every appointment, must accompany you.

All tests are performed as a method of comparison to gather information.

Due to time constraints, the technicians may not be able to give you a personalized style. In some cases, you may have to blow dry your own hair. We will provide hairdryers and brushes.

Your hair must be shampooed 24 hours prior to the day of your color. You should not shampoo your hair for 2-3 days prior to a relaxer service. We require that the hair be clean, since hair that is not clean will result in inaccurate test results. Please do not leave any heavy styling products in your hair, as this could result in rescheduling your appointment.

THE HAIRCOLOR PROGRAM

A technician will determine if your hair meets the criteria for a specific color test. If there is a test color you qualify for, we will schedule an appointment for you. Once a shade has been selected, you may be required to keep that shade for as many applications as testing protocol indicates. We will try our best to accommodate your color preferences but we ask that you keep in mind that we select color based on PROJECT NEEDS. When your haircolor test is complete (i.e. 1 – 6 applications) we will give you a formula that is close to your color, so you can continue to have your hair colored for future maintenance. There are no corrective haircolor services, as we are testing NEW haircolor products. If you do not have enough re-growth we will have to reschedule your appointment. Hair must have at least ¾” of natural, not color-treated regrowth at any haircolor appointment.

THE CHEMICAL TEXTURE SERVICE PROGRAM

The technicians will determine if your hair meets the criteria (i.e. length and/or condition)for the testing of chemical texture services. If your hair is appropriate for the test, you are required to have your hair checked at intervals following the service; typically at 2 weeks and 4 weeks, however testing protocol will vary from project to project. You may not cut your hair until after both re-check appointments have been complete. If you color your hair, you must not have colored your hair for 2 weeks prior to testing, and must refrain from using haircolor for 2 weeks following. If you do not have re-growth showing at the scalp the day of the perm or relaxer appointment, we will cancel and reschedule the appointment. Participation in a chemical service may limit eligibility to participate in hair color and styling appointments. When receiving a relaxer service, DO NOT shampoo your hair at least 2-3 days prior to your appointment.

THE HAIRCARE/STYLING PROGRAM

Haircare/styling services consist of a NON-CHEMICAL PRODUCT TESTS. The test product will be a shampoo, conditioner, treatment or styling product. Your hair will be styled according to testing protocol which is subject to change without notice. Certain chemical product tests restrict clients from this program.

Appointment Schedule:

  • Haircolor: Color appointments can be scheduled every 6 weeks, Tuesday – Friday. Please see the reception desk to re-book following hair color service. In order to book a 6 week haircolor appointment, you must participate in a minimum of 1 separate styling appointment prior to each haircolor appointment. The same shade may be applied for 1–6 consecutive applications, depending on the haircolor study.
  • Styling/Haircare: Appointments as per our testing needs and requirements. Styling appointments will not be booked on the same day as a haircolor appointment.
  • Chemical Texture Services: Appointments as per our testing needs and requirements

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: Am I required to change into a client robe?

A: Yes. Robes are provided in order to avoid damage to your clothing. We are not responsible for any damage that may occur to clothing during the testing process, therefore it is necessary that you change into the provided client robes.

Q: Will my hair be styled?

A: For hair care and styling testing, yes your hair will be styled. Please keep in mind that the final style needs to fit the criteria for the products we are testing. For example: if we are testing a product for curly hair, you will need to remain curly. For haircolor testing, you may need to blow dry your own hair.

Q: Is this service a make-over?

A: No. These services are for product development and / or quality assurance.

Q: Why are these services free?

A: We offer services at no charge in order to entice the necessary volume of participants for testing the great variety of products under development. This allows us to ensure the highest quality products possible. Qualified, licensed hairstylists perform these services.

Q: How is the testing conducted?

A: All testing is done in a comparative manner. All products will be observed for a variety of attributes.

Q: Will using two products on my hair be noticeable?

A: Generally not. The comparison of products is usually so similar that there is no noticeable difference.

Q: Can anyone get a service done without signing a release form?

A: No. Each client receiving a service must be pre-screened and accepted into the program. Each client is required to sign the release form for each visit. The form states, among other things, that this is a testing facility that you are aware that the test products are being used on your hair, and you have done the necessary allergy test.

Q: Are children allowed in the testing center?

A: No. It is a L’Oréal USA policy due to safety and insurance purposes that children under the age of twelve are not allowed to accompany you to the technical development facility for client consultations or appointments.

Q: What is a hair care and styling service?

A: A 1½ hour service using one of the following products: shampoo, conditioner, gel, hairspray, mousse, spray gel, etc, on your hair and evaluating the product.

Q: How long should I plan to be here for a service?

A: You must plan on being at the facility at least : 1 ½ total hours for a hair care and styling appointment; a minimum of 3 complete hours for a hair color appointment and at least 4 whole hours when participating in a chemical texture service. We always to our best to communicate ahead of time, when possible, if appointments may take longer than typically expected. Inability to remain patiently in the facility for the lengths of time indicated can affect your eligibility to participate. We do not guarantee order of applications. A service is not complete until all necessary parties have had the opportunity to evaluate the test.

Q: What happens if I am late to my appointment?

A: As a courtesy to you, we give a 15 minute grace period. If you arrive up to 15 minutes late please know that your service may be delayed and your appointment may last longer than scheduled. If you are consistently late for appointments, regularly cancel or do not show up, you will be removed from the program.

Q: Is this a training facility for the hairstylists?

A: No. The hairstylists are licensed cosmetologists. Each of the hairstylists works or has worked in a salon.

Q: Are the chemicals damaging to my hair?

A: All products go through rigorous testing at our lab facility before we receive them at the testing center, and are no more dangerous to your hair than other products in the same product category. Furthermore, all products go through safety clearance for use on hair.

Q: Can I get any hair color I want?

A: We will work with you to meet your requests for the services or hair color you desire. Our goal is to make you feel beautiful!

Q: Do you perform animal testing?

A: No, we do not perform tests on animals.

Q: If you are going to shampoo my hair, why do I need to shampoo the day before my service?

A: The hair must be cleansed no more than twenty four hours before your appointment. Unclean hair or a build-up of styling products will obscure many of the attributes we observe and cause inaccurate test results.

Q: I have had my appointment for three weeks, why is it being canceled or rescheduled?

A: We may need to change appointments based on changes in project priorities or product availability. We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule an appointment at any time, for any reason.

Q: If an appointment is not available, may I have the products to take home and do my own hair?

A: No. The testing facility is an on-site facility and only products in development are used. Furthermore, all of the L’Oréal hair color and perms used are for professional use only. If your hair color appointment needs to be rescheduled or you have a pressing social event, we can recommend an over the counter product for you to use on a one time basis.

Q: May I offer my technician a gratuity?

A: Gratuities are a matter of personal choice and are not expected.

Q: Do I need to return after a service?

A: You are expected to be available to return, when needed. For a haircolor service, you may need to return every 6 weeks for a minimum of 3 applications. Depending on the test, you may need to return for a 15-minute visual color check. For a chemical service, it is required that you return for two follow-up appointments.

Q: Does the New York Technical Salon give away free products after services?

A: No. Free products are not standard following any of our complimentary services. Promotional offers are available from time to time. Please provide a valid email address in order to receive communications about such opportunities.

Q: Will my appointments be confirmed?

A: Yes. Please indicate your preferred method of confirmation in the following paperwork (i.e. Phone, Email). Confirmations will be delivered ONLY according to your preference. If you do not respond to your confirmation, your appointment is automatically considered confirmed and failure to attend will be considered a ‘no-show’. We will confirm no later than 5:30pm the day prior to your appointment, unless holidays prohibit. If a holiday occurs the day before your appointment, you will be confirmed sooner.

Q: How do I reach someone at the facility?

A: Please refer to your appointment slip for our phone number and email, should you need to reach us. You will not be able to reach us at the phone number that appears on caller-ID and cell phones. Please call 917.606.9564. We do not send or receive text messages with our phone number.

Q: What do I need to do to prepare for my appointment?

A: Hair must be relatively clean to receive haircolor or styling. Please shampoo hair no longer than 24 hours before any hair color or styling services. Understand that your appointment may be rescheduled due to improperly cleansed hair or the use of heavy styling products or the presence of any color pencils/crayons/sprays on my hair.

***When scheduled for a relaxer, DO NOT shampoo hair 2 – 3 days prior to service.

Please read and agree to the Important Guidelines

GUIDELINES

We have some basic guidelines to insure both your comfort and our testing needs.

  • I must have a valid skin allergy test to participate in hair color tests.
    • Skin Allergy Tests are required for color service eligibility. These tests are done to determine an allergy or a sensitivity to hair color and must be done even if color was done previously at another location. If a reaction is experienced within 48 hours, it is your responsibility to communicate the symptoms to us. If you have not had hair color for six months, an allergy test will be performed before being allowed participation in color testing. If you have a tattoo, regular or permanent make-up, since your last color appointment, an allergy test will be performed prior to color service. Skin allergy tests are mandatory and can’t be waived under any circumstance.
  • Certain hair length requirements apply for specific tests. Hair length is maintained no shorter than 3” but not in excess of collar bone length. Hair that is not maintained within these parameters will not be eligible for routine bookings.
  • Specific technicians may not be requested.
  • It may take longer to perform a service than it would in a salon. Allow for a minimum of 3 hours for a color appointment, 2½ hours for a styling appointment, and 3 hours or more for a perm or relaxer. Be prepared when booking an appointment to spend the length of time necessary for the test to be conducted.
  • I will not be able to pick my exact hair color, but the technician will try to keep me in the shade family with which I am comfortable.
  • One or more hair colors may be placed in a small area at the nape or the back of the head.
  • Appointments are booked according to testing needs and priorities. I may not always meet the test criteria and therefore may not be a suitable candidate.
  • Due to time constraints, I may not get a personal style after my color service, and I may need to blow dry my own hair.
  • My hair must be relatively clean to receive hair color or styling. I must shampoo my hair no longer than 24 hours before any service. For relaxers, I will not shampoo my hair 2-3 days prior to my service. I understand that my appointment may be rescheduled due to improperly cleansed hair or use of heavy styling products or the presence of any color pencils/crayons on my hair.
  • Hair color appointments must be spaced out no less than 6 weeks.
  • If I arrive up to 15 minutes late, I know that my service may be delayed, and/or my appointment may last longer than scheduled. If I am consistently late for appointments, regularly cancel or do not show up, I will be removed from the program.
  • After consistent no-show, cancellation without 24-hour advance notice, or consistent late arrival will result in removal from the program.
  • I will refrain from eating/drinking and talking on my cell phone during my appointment except when in the lobby.
  • NYTS does not perform “re-do” but will gladly try to adjust the color at my next appointment.
  • Highlights and lowlights are offered only when such tests are needed and are invite-only according to the specific hair profile required.
  • I understand that the New York Technical Salon reserves the right to refuse service.
